Why counseling psychology?

Professional psychology practitioners provide mental health services that are crucial for healthy communities. St. Thomas students complete their practica and frequently seek employment in community-based settings that serve underserved groups. The program also prepares practitioners for work in university counseling centers, correctional facilities, treatment centers, schools, and private practice. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, professional psychology jobs are expected to increase 11 percent by 2032.

Students who have completed an undergraduate degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency – regardless of major – are eligible to apply.

Make a difference in the Interprofessional Center

Interested graduate psychology students at St. Thomas can apply to do their practicum at the Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services (IPC), a free clinic at St. Thomas that helps people and communities facing complex psychological, social and legal issues. While providing these services to their clients, graduate psychology students gain critical interprofessional skills collaborating with students from St. Thomas's Schools of Social Work and Law.
