DSW Professional Notes

Dalila John, ‘23 

Dr. Dalila John recently accepted a position at the University of Alabama as MSW program director, assistant professor of practice. Dr. John will begin her new position in August.  

Dr. John presented three presentations:  

  • “Collaborative Social Work Education Begins with Us: Strengthening Connections for Black Social Work Faculty” at the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors Annual Conference in Birmingham, Ala. in March.  
  • “Advancing Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) in Social Work Education: Examining the Experiences of African Americans Social Work Faculty” as a virtual workshop at the National DSW Conference on Social Work Education and Social Work Education and Social Work Practice in March. 
    "Bridging the Gap and Strengthening the Union between Social Work Education and Practice” at the National Association of Social Workers Michigan Statewide Conference in Kalamazoo, Mich. in May. 

Cameron Overton, current student 

Cameron has been promoted to program director of a brand-new Master of Social Work Program at Alverno College. Now fully in charge of program design, Cameron has structured the program to align with the new 2022 social work education standards and has created an innovative online program focused on anti-oppression and abolition social work. The program launches in the fall of 2023.

Angela Baerwolf, ‘23 

Congratulations to Dr. Angela Baerwolf for being accepted to a position at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as an Assistant Professor in the social work department. In April they presented work from their dissertation at the Safe School, Safe Communities Conference hosted by GSAFE at the UW-Green Bay campus, as well as led a workshop on supporting LGBTQ students and families to school social workers at the Northcentral Regional Meeting in Wisconsin.  

Talolo Lepale, current student 

Talolo Tua Lepale, Jr. is an assistant professor and the director for field education for the Department of Social Work and Social Ecology in the School of Behavioral Health at Loma Linda University. Recently, Professor Lepale was appointed to the position of assistant program director for LLU’s MSW program as well as program director for their dual master’s degree program in criminal justice and social work. He will be transitioning into his new role at LLU in June 2023.  

Candice Sorapuru, current student 

On March 3, 2023, Candice presented “Let’s Talk: How Can We Create Anti-Racist Policies in an Inherently Racist System?” at the 2023 National DSW Conference on Education and Social Work.
