Be prepared for practice

St. Thomas Center for Simulation

High-Fidelity Simulation

By completing up to 50% of their clinical experience in St. Thomas' simulation, BSN and MSN nursing students will gain hands-on leadership experience assessing, managing, and evaluating some of the most difficult scenarios they may face in providing whole-person care as professional nurses. In a controlled environment utilizing sophisticated simulation equipment and strategies, students will have the chance to employ their nursing knowledge to save lives and provide exceptional care in high-stakes situations.

For example, while nursing students may observe the treatment of a patient experiencing a myocardial infarction at a clinical site, they will not actually deliver or manage the care of that patient until they are employed as licensed nurses. In simulation, nursing students can manage the care of a simulated patient experiencing a realistic myocardial infarction within the context of a supportive learning environment. These experiences allow nursing students to feel more confident and better prepared when they encounter actual patient situations in their nursing practice.

The Susan S. Morrison School of Nursing uses high-fidelity simulation equipment from Gaumard as well as Laerdal's Learning Management Solution for health care simulation and education, SimCapture. By utilizing SimCapture, faculty have the ability to manage, record, and assess all simulation and debriefing activity within the Center for Simulation, while students gain experience using real, measurable data to improve health outcomes.
